Free Local HDTV Channel List
Q: Can I receive any High Definition TV channels without using a cable or satellite box?
A: Yes. If you have a TV that is equipped with an ATSC/QAM tuner you can receive digital local network programs for free whether you are on cable or using an antenna.
Cable Subscribers: Cox Communications does not scramble the local digital network channels. These channels can be tuned in using the QAM tuner that is in most current HDTV's but they have their own set of channel numbers that can only be accessed with the QAM tuner. (See chart below). For HD Cable Channels such as ESPN-HD & Discovery Channel-HD you will need to get a HD Receiver Box from your cable or satelite provider as these types of channels are scrambled and must be unscrambled by the HD Receiver Box.
Antenna or Satellite Users: All of the major local TV broadcast stations are sending out digital & HD signals from their transmitters on specific UHF bands set aside by the FCC for digital broadcasts. All that is required to receive these digital broadcasts is a good UHF antenna and a TV with the ATSC tuner. These digital channels can be accessed only with an ATSC tuner and their channel number's are different than the analog broadcast channel number's.
Below is a chart that shows the channel locations for unscrambled digital and HD programming on cable and antenna systems:
